Signs of Water Damage in Your Home

Just because the visible water is gone doesn’t mean your property is dry. We see it all the time; homeowners and business operators who think a flood, leak, or appliance spill is resolved once the mopping and drying is done.

Water staining and damp marks on an interior wall — a clear sign of water damage

The reality is that moisture often lingers deep in floors, subfloor, underlay, wall cavities, ceilings, and other hidden areas. Hidden dampness leads to mould, odours, and structural damage, which spells costly remediation further down the line.

Our goal here isn’t to give a DIY how-to, but to give you a way of identifying the signs of water damage, so you know the right time to call the water damage specialists.

Sign 1: Persistent Musty or Earthy Smell With No Obvious Source

That musty, earthy odour isn’t just unpleasant, it’s one of the clearest signs of water damage. It’s produced by mould or mildew metabolising organic materials in damp conditions.

If you notice the smell concentrating near skirting boards, wardrobe bases, or along one wall, treat it as a diagnostic clue. Try to stay clear of masking it with air fresheners or cleaning products. The odour is a signal that moisture is still there somewhere below the surface, even if everything looks dry.

Sign 2: Warping, Buckling, or Lifting in Floors or Skirting Boards

Moisture often moves from beneath the surface, so the effects appear later. Timber or engineered floorboards may cup (edges higher than the centre) or crown (centre raised above edges). Skirting boards may swell, separate, or bow.

Vinyl or tile joins lifting or shifting is another indicator. These are all signs of water damage that require attention; surface dryness can be deceptive and professional assessment is needed to prevent long-term issues.

Sign 3: Paint Bubbling, Peeling, or Tide Marks on Walls or Ceilings

Moisture trapped behind plasterboard pushes through to the surface to cause paint to bubble, peel, or leave tide marks. Yellowish or brownish streaks are mineral deposits left behind as water evaporates.

A key rule: if the stain or bubble returns after repainting, it’s a clear sign of water damage that hasn’t been addressed. Painting over it without treating the underlying moisture will only hide the problem temporarily.

Sign 4: Cold or Damp Patches on Interior Walls

Moisture-laden wall cavities often feel cooler to the touch than surrounding surfaces. Saturated insulation retains water long after adjacent materials appear dry, creating hidden damp zones.

Secondary signals include condensation forming on walls in rooms that weren’t directly affected by the initial water event. Cold, damp patches are reliable signs of water damage that require professional inspection.

Sign 5: Humidity or Condensation Inside the Property That Was Not There Before

Trapped moisture in subfloors or wall cavities raises overall indoor humidity. You may notice unexplained condensation forming on windows, mirrors, or other cold surfaces, even in rooms that seemed unaffected initially.

A basic hygrometer reading will confirm humidity levels. Unusually damp air - combined with other signs of water damage - is a signal that professional drying might be needed to prevent long-term harm.

The Actions You Need to Avoid

  • Assuming Carpet or Floors Are Dry: Surface dryness doesn’t mean moisture is gone. Underlay and subfloor can stay damp which creates a mould risk.
  • Repainting Over Tide Marks: Covering stains without fixing the moisture source only delays the problem. Moisture must be treated first.
  • Relying on Airflow Alone: Open windows or fans aren’t enough. Deep layers need professional air movers and dehumidifiers.
  • Ignoring Musty Smells: A persistent earthy or mouldy odour is a key sign of water damage. Don’t wait - call a professional.
  • Using Household Vacuums on Wet Carpet: Standard vacuums can’t remove water safely and may spread contamination. Professional extraction is essential.
  • Underestimating Small Leaks: Even minor spills can soak underboards or wall cavities. Hidden moisture can cause long-term damage.
  • Delaying Professional Help: Waiting can be costly. Early action with water damage specialists prevents bigger problems.
